Lady Weasel

Watching Winterwatch this evening reminded me of this piece I wrote during my MA. I was extremely proud of it at the time and still really love it now.

Fast, fearless and feisty. This diminutive diva takes on opponents many times her size with gusto. She is confident in her abilities and saunters around like the queen of the castle she truly is. Sitting atop a dry stone wall, she looks down and surveys her kingdom.

She stands on her hind legs to get a better view and is content all is in order. No one out of place. No one daring to challenge her might. Her left ear has a section missing from when a rebel tried to seize power. She saw off her rival with ease and has not been confronted since. Lady Weasel is fond of that memory, for that was when she discovered her true strength and realised the reputation she could build.

Russet body, stomach cotton white. Pointed snout and eyes that shine like onyx. She’s alert, alluring and adaptable. Her long, slender form allows her access to the most exclusive locations, whether she needs them to hunt, or just to rest. Her sensitive whiskers inform her of the latest comings and goings in her territory and let her know if any of her subjects are out of line . She is ruthless in russet, formidable in fur. Lady Weasel is not an animal to be messed with.

She is putting lots of effort into raising her sons and daughters. Will they be as brutal as their mother? Only time will tell.

Blade tipped toes and teeth as sharp as red hot pokers are the only weapons she needs. Lady Weasel has no need for an army or brave knights to fight for her. Alone she is dangerous enough.

She dispatches animals, time and time again with merciless efficiency. She says she kills only to eat – but they know she enjoys the thrill of the chase and the running of blood.

All who know her, fear her. For she is their ruler, their master, their executioner.
